Vol Dining has installed Heinz Remix machines in Southern Kitchen and Dippers, allowing students to customize the flavor of their condiments.
These machines allow for over 2,000 flavor combinations, giving students the freedom to create the perfect sauce for their mood and preferences. The machines can be found at Southern Kitchen, located in Vol Hall, and Dippers, located in Hess Hall.
To customize your condiment, you begin with a base: ketchup, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, mustard or ranch dressing. You can choose up to two bases in your unique combination. You can then add up to two flavors: bacon, buffalo, jalapeño, caramelized onion, honey, roasted garlic, smoky chipotle and mango. You also get to choose the intensity of the flavor: low, medium or high.
The director of Vol Dining, Amanda Hough, issued a statement about the machines.
“We are excited to partner with Heinz to bring the new Remix machine to Dippers and Southern Kitchen as part of a pilot program at select universities. … Locations were chosen based on volume and menu offerings, making them ideal spots for students to customize and elevate their meals,” Hough said. “At Vol Dining, we’re always looking for new ways to deliver exceptional, high-quality dining to the student experience, and this program aligns perfectly with that goal.”
Students have been enjoying the machines and the ability to create their perfect custom sauce.
Freshman Luke Jones has perfected his recipe and gets it every time he visits Southern Kitchen.
“It’s ranch, mango and buffalo sauce, so it’s like a sweet ranch,” Jones said.
Jones has used the Remix machine multiple times and highly recommends other students to utilize it as well.
“I think (the machine) is fun to use, and, also, the sauce you get is better than just something plain,” Jones said.
Since the machines are a new addition on campus, many students are trying it for the first time. Freshmen Bennett Etheridge was a first-time user of the machine in Southern Kitchen.
“(The machine) looks cool — I’m excited to try it,” Etheridge said. He concocted a bacon, jalapeño ranch sauce.
In addition to being fully customizable, the machine offers several preset “featured recipes.” These include honey mustard, buffalo ranch, chipotle aioli, sweet & smoky BBQ and several other combinations recommended by Heinz.
While the Remix machine at Dippers may see more traction — as chicken tenders and fries are some of the most common foods to pair with sauce — you may find yourself surprised at how many of the southern homestyle meals offered at Southern Kitchen can be improved once you find the right flavor combinations.
