The Office of Career Services is sponsoring an Undecided Student Workshop to provide some guidance for UT’s first- and second-year students.
Career Services hopes to ease the process of selecting a major and career path with this interactive workshop that will take place on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In its third year assisting UT students, this workshop is designed to connect students with the great resources present on campus as well as through the department of Career Services to help them prepare for later life by choosing an appropriate major now.
“The workshop will encourage undecided students to progress in the career decision-making process by exposing them to next steps they can take to choose a major and the resources that are available to help them along the way,” Stephanie Kit, Career Services associate director, said. “Ultimately we want to assist students, so that they feel more comfortable about choosing a major.”
The workshop is geared toward students at any stage in the process of choosing a major, predominantly for those undecided students who have not yet visited Career Services.
This office is designed to assist students with any issues they may have concerning employment, offering personality testing for career matching, career counseling and also help finding part-time and full-time jobs.
“We offer many services for students who are choosing or changing majors, and the workshop is just one additional way that allows us to offer assistance to students on this topic,” Kit said.
First the program will help students review the list of majors offered at UT. Then staff will aid students in generating their own list of possible majors to consider. Students will work in the computer lab to discover Web resources that will help them pinpoint a fitting career choice. Then students will be presented with the options they have for next steps, such as scheduling a private career-counseling appointment.
“The small-group format allows us to share specific resources based on students’ interests,” Jenny Ward, assistant director of Career Services, said.
In the anonymous survey taken after last year’s seminar, students were enthusiastic about their experiences.
Students who attended the workshop said the workshop was very helpful and helped them feel more prepared.
“We encourage students to RSVP by calling Career Services at 974-5435 or emailing [email protected] because we try to keep the workshops small so that participants receive individual assistance,” Kit said.
To aid students in choosing a major, the office takes a four-step approach. It features resources to help students make self-assessments, explore various careers, plan their futures and make their final career decision. Career Services also sponsors other workshops to help students find internships and create job applications.
