Both Tennessee’s men’s and women’s teams finished in third place at Sunday’s SEC Cross Country Championships, hosted by South Carolina.
The Vols were passed late by Alabama in the men’s race, losing their grasp on a second-place finish. The Lady Vols were strengthened by the middle of their lineup, as they were able to finish ahead of a top-heavy Alabama team.
The morning began with the men’s race, where the Vols finished third behind Arkansas and Alabama. Tennessee looked to be in a good position to take second place with as little as 1,000 meters to go, but the Crimson Tide made a late push to take second away from the Vols.
Yaseen Abdalla was the top finisher for Tennessee, coming in fourth place overall. Gabriel Sanchez came in eighth, with Dean Casey, Brandon Olden and Jacob Lewis also finishing in points positions. Victor Kiprop of Alabama won the individual competition.
The women’s individual race was a two-runner battle throughout, but Florida’s Parker Valby pulled away late and won the individual race by 33 seconds. Ashley Jones was the top individual finisher for Tennessee, finishing 10th.
As a team, the Lady Vols also came in third place behind SEC champions Florida and Arkansas. Even though Alabama had two runners in podium places, Tennessee was more consistent throughout their runners. Rachel Sutliff and Jessie Secor finished 13th and 14th respectively, while Jillian Candelino and Caroline Lyerly also scored points for the Lady Vols.
The Vols and Lady Vols will next head to Virginia Tech to take part in the Hokie Open next week. The following week, Tennessee will look to qualify for the national championships in a regional race hosted by Florida. If Tennessee qualifies, the team will head to Charlottesville, Virginia, for the national championships hosted by Virginia.
