Tennessee ended its two-game losing streak with a win over Missouri in four sets (25-23, 16-25, 25-16, 25-19) on Wednesday night at the Hearnes Center.
No. 12 Tennessee (17-3, 8-2 SEC) rebounded after losing a couple SEC games in a row. Missouri (13-8, 5-5) was coming off a three-game winning streak in conference play before the loss to the Lady Vols.
This is the second time the Lady Vols and Tigers have faced off this season. The first matchup was also won by Tennessee as the Lady Vols swept the Tigers in Knoxville.
Morgahn Fingall led the way on offense for Tennessee with 17 kills. Setter Caroline Kerr had a productive outing with 40 assists and 15 digs.
Neither team was very efficient on offense. Tennessee had a hitting percentage of .213. Missouri’s hitting percentage was .121.
Tennessee’s defense was the story of the game. The Lady Vols had 60 digs as a team which was 10 more than the Tigers had. Tennessee had 51 kills and Missouri managed 43.
The Lady Vols’ front line made it difficult on the Tigers and finished with 12 blocks. Tennessee’s ability to overcome a sluggish offensive game with a solid defensive performance was a big reason it was able to win in four sets.
The first set was competitive throughout. Tennessee was unable to build a big lead but found itself up 20-16. The Lady Vols closed out the set 25-23 and took a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers jumped all over the Lady Vols in the second set and won 25-16. Tennessee was able to respond and reverse the outcome of the third set, winning it by the same score of 25-16.
The Lady Vols did what they have done in many SEC matches this season in the fourth set. They used a 5-0 run to go up 15-9. Tennessee rode this momentum to a 25-19 victory in the fourth to close out the Tigers.
