Tennessee took care of LSU in a sweep (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) on Friday night in Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
No. 8 Tennessee (22-3, 13-2 SEC) is still trying to win at least a share of the SEC title. LSU (11-14, 6-9) continues its uneven performance in conference play.
Raeven Chase had one of her best games of the season, leading Tennessee with 12 kills on a blistering hit percentage of .733. Chase also added five blocks to add to Tennessee’s total of 10.
Tennessee’s defense never allowed LSU to get comfortable as the Tigers had a hitting percentage of .155. The Lady Vols had 44 kills on a percentage of .391.
Tennessee controlled the first set after an early 1-3 deficit. The Lady Vols used a 12-5 run to take a 13-8 lead. Three serving aces helped Tennessee turn the tide in the first after LSU came out strong. From that point, Tennessee scored consistently to keep the Tigers from getting within three points.
The lead was pushed to seven and Tennessee led 21-14. The Lady Vols closed out the first set with a kill by Jenaisya Moore to win 25-18.
The second set started out with continued momentum from Tennessee as the Lady Vols jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Tennessee led 14-8 after a 3-0 run and another service ace by Yelianiz Torres.
LSU made the second set interesting when it cut the lead to 21-19. However, Tennessee prevailed once again in a late-set situation, closing the set with a 25-22 win.
Heading into the game, Tennessee had won the first two sets 17 times and finished with the sweep in 14 games. They started the third set with that goal in mind and led 4-0. Later in the set, a 3-0 run put the Lady Vols up 14-7.
Another 3-0 run gave Tennessee a 22-14 lead after another attack error by LSU. After that point, the Tigers never seriously threatened to take the lead from the Lady Vols. A kill by Chase secured the 25-18 win and Tennessee’s 15th sweep of the season.
