No. 18 Lady Vols tennis began its season on a high note on Sunday, winning 7-0 against both Furman and Chattanooga.
All 12 singles matches ended in two-set victories for the No. 18 Lady Vols (2-0), while both doubles points were won 2-0.
Lady Vols vs Furman
The day began with an immediate strong start for Tennessee. Alana Wolfberg and Esther Adeshina teamed up to defeat Furman 6-1, while Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
No. 92 Cabezas was dominant in singles play as well, as she took down Furman’s Sara Snyder 6-1, 6-1. Adeshina bageled Macy Hitchcock in the first set and won Tennessee’s third point of the match after a 7-5 second-set win. The match was clinched when No. 100 Eleonora Molinaro defeated Grace Thomas 6-2, 6-4.
No. 91 Wolfberg needed a second-set tiebreak to defeat Maeve Thornton in straight sets. Lauren Anzalotta defeated Jess Dawson 6-4, 6-4. Catherine Aulia concluded Tennessee’s perfect matchup with a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win over Ellie Schulson.
Lady Vols vs Chattanooga
Molinaro paired with Leyla Britez Risso to give Tennessee the lead in doubles with a 6-2 win. Cabezas and Tomase teamed up again and won their set 6-4 to give the Lady Vols the doubles point.
Adeshina followed up her earlier win with a perfect performance against Chattanooga’s Margaret Manolache, winning 6-0, 6-0. Cabezas took care of Rozalie Dohnalova with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Risso clinched the match for Tennessee by defeating Emma Pedretti 6-3, 6-1.
Molinaro added to her earlier match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Alice Hall. No. 115 Tomase did not play singles in the first match and defeated Emma Peeler 7-5, 6-1. Aulia finished off a 14-0 day for the Lady Vols by defeating Caroline Gibbens 6-2, 6-2.
“Our entire team is excited about this season,” head coach Alison Ojeda said. “We have got a very mature and experienced group of young women who are prepared to compete for a championship.”
