Tennessee soccer lost its third game in a row on Friday, dropping a 2-0 road contest against Georgia.
Two goals that came three minutes apart saw the Lady Vols (7-4-3, 2-3-2 SEC) fall to the Bulldogs (7-4-5, 3-2-3).
Georgia dominated most of the game, out-shooting Tennessee, 17-10. The Bulldogs recorded seven shots on Tennessee’s goal, putting two past Lady Vols goalkeeper Ally Zazzara.
Here’s how the Lady Vols lost to the Bulldogs.
Tense first half ends scoreless
Georgia recorded seven shots in the first 45 minutes, but only three troubled Zazzara. Tennessee earned two shots in the first period, both of which came from substitutes.
In transition, Sarah Greiner made a run and had space for a shot at Georgia’s goal but put it wide. Later on, Keaton Mitchell took an attempt, but it was saved by the Bulldogs.
Tennessee had to defend four corner kick attempts from Georgia in the first half but did so without conceding.
Georgia takes late lead, doubles up quickly
It took 67 minutes for either side to score, and it was Georgia who took the lead. Nicole Vernis gave the Bulldogs the opening goal to go ahead.
Just three minutes later, Dasia Torbert beat Zazzara to the bottom left of the net, adding to Georgia’s advantage. After dominating the game, the Bulldogs saw their advantage show on the scoreboard.
Down two goals, Tennessee couldn’t generate enough of an attack to come back. With six minutes to go, Zazzara saved a Georgia penalty to keep Tennessee’s deficit at two.
The road ahead
Tennessee has three games remaining in the regular season. On Thursday, the Lady Vols host South Carolina in their final home game of the year. They end the regular-season slate with road trips to Kentucky and Florida after the matchup with the Gators was postponed due to Hurricane Helene.
If Tennessee can maintain its top-12 position in the SEC standings, it will participate in the SEC Tournament. Then, the Lady Vols will hope to earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament to compete for a national championship.
