Tennessee track and field secured several top finishes at the Orange & Purple Invitational on Friday, hosted by Clemson, highlighted by a sweep from the men’s pole vault team.
Vols sophomore Clarke Byram took the win in men’s pole vault with a jump of 5.55 meters, just shy of his personal record of 5.61 meters, which placed him among the top 10 nationally in the Track & Field Results Reporting System rankings.
This result was followed by his senior teammates Blake Sifferlin, Evan Puckett and Cade Gray, who completed the sweep for the Vols. Sifferlin placed second after clearing 5.40 meters, while Puckett secured third with a matching 5.40-meter vault. Sifferlin and Puckett, with their indoor NCAA rankings, are tied for the No. 18 spot. Gray then rounded out the top four at fourth, with a 5.25-meter clearance.
On the other hand, Lady Vol Mya Strahm finished second in women’s pole vault, jumping 4.19 meters and ranking No. 24 on the NCAA Division I list so far this season. Strahm holds the Lady Vols’ freshman school record at 4.42 meters. Notably, senior Kendall Ford placed fourth at 3.94 meters.
Junior Grant Campbell placed third in the men’s high jump category after clearing 2.07 meters, adding another top-three result for the Vols in the field events.
While Tennessee produced multiple top finishes, the invitational also featured notable performances from other top programs. Clemson set four new school records. Alabama dominated with first-place wins in both the men’s and women’s one-mile, while its 400-meter runner Mouatez Sikiou set an Algerian national record with his time of 45.82 seconds.
The strong competition throughout the meet provided Tennessee with an opportunity to measure itself against opponents in the indoor season. The Vols leave Clemson as they continue to try to build momentum heading into the remainder of the indoor season.
Tennessee will continue its indoor campaign in South Carolina on Jan. 30-31 at the Bob Pollock Invitational meet.
