The Central Program Council is holding a membership drive for each of its seven committees, among them the Cultural Attractions Committee.
The CPC is a student-run organization that brings such varied speakers as Al Sharpton and Ron Jeremy to the university.
The president of the CPC said that the organization is looking for students with varied interests to apply.
“CPC is looking for motivated, hard-working people who want to work on event planning,” Joseph Hubbard, senior in political science, said. “We really want the whole campus to be represented, so I hope students from a wide variety of backgrounds will apply.”
Hubbard said that the CPC tries to compliment what students learn in their classes with events that provide a more personal and less textbook experience.
“Just this year, CPC sponsored Homecoming, All-Sing, Maya Angelou, Al Sharpton, ‘Hotel Rwanda,’ Vol Night Long, Arlo Guthrie, ‘Citizen Kane,’ an international series and the cast of the ‘Real World,’” he said.
The CAC, one of the committees under the CPC, is also holding a membership drive and its vice chair said that it has been a great experience for her to be a part of it.
“I’ve been on the CAC since my second semester [of my] sophomore year, and being a committee ‘junkie’ at UT, this has been my favorite committee by far,” Adrienne Rosenberg, senior in global studies, said.
“I feel that it’s always something new.”
Hubbard said he felt similarly.
“Although it’s a lot of work, working on the CPC is incredibly fun and rewarding,” he said. “The office staff makes sure that students are an integral part of the decision-making and direction of the programming. The students involved are dedicated and passionate, and it’s truly amazing to listen to everything that is going on each week.”
Both Hubbard and Rosenberg said that through the CPC and CAC, they’ve been able to meet famous people like Arlo Guthrie, Maya Angelou, Tucker Carlson and the staff of satirical newspaper The Onion.
The deadline for CPC applications is today, but the deadline for the CAC is Feb. 28. Applications can be picked up on the third floor of the University Center in the student activities office or online at http://web.utk.edu/~cpc1/.
