The president of the American Civil Liberties Union and a former U.S. attorney general will participate in a hardcore debate about pornography tonight in an event sponsored by the Issues Committee and the Women’s Coordinating Council.
Pornography Undressed: A Debate with Nadine Strossen and Edwin Meese begins at 7: 30 p.m. at the University Center Auditorium and is free to the public.
According to Issues Committee chair Jason Fletcher the event is taking place at a perfect time of the year.
These are two high profile speakers who are addressing a very relevant topic in the middle of women’s history month, Fletcher said.
Strossen is a professor at New York Law School and has lectured extensively in the areas of civil liberties and international human rights. She was the first woman to head the ACLU, the nation’s largest and oldest civil liberties organization.
Her book, Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex and the Fight for Women’s Rights, was named a New York Times Notable in 1995.
Meese is a Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow in Pubic Policy and chair of the Center for Judicial and Legal Studies.
Under Reagan’s administration, Meese served as Chairman of the Domestic Policy Council and the National Drug Policy Board, and was a member of the National Security Council, where he played a role in the execution and development of domestic and foreign policy.
