Lady Vols tennis defeated Oklahoma State in an instant classic at Stillwater, downing the Cowgirls, 4-2. Tennessee advanced to the Elite Eight by handing the Cowgirls their first loss of the season.
The Lady Vols’ doubles hot streak came to a close at the start of the match. No. 1 seed Oklahoma State (29-1) took care of business on Courts 1 and 3. Entering the match, No. 16 seed Tennessee had lost the doubles point on four occasions, most recently against Georgia in the SEC Tournament.
Entering the singles frame down for only the fifth time this season, the score would hit even after a medical forfeit on Court 3. No. 46 Lucia Peyre was forced to forfeit the match, leveling the overall score at one.
Back even. Oklahoma State’s No. 3 Ange Oby Kajuru defeated Elza Tomase, 6-2, 6-3, pushing the Cowgirls back into the driver’s seat. With Oklahoma State up 2-1, the pressure was on the Lady Vols.
Catherine Aulia followed the loss on Court 2 with a victory on Court 4. Aulia, who after the victory now sports a 17-6 singles record, won with a score of 6-4, 6-1 over No. 72 Safiya Carrington, tying the game up in two sets.
Esther Adeshina followed Aulia, defeating Kristina Novak, 6-4, 6-3. Novak hadn’t lost in singles play entering the match. Adeshina ended that streak with her two-set win.
With two courts remaining, Lauren Anzalotta and No. 14 Sofia Cabezas both remained in striking distance as their games pushed to the third set.
Cabezas defeated No.18 Anastasiya Komar 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6) at Court 1, completing the upset over the nation’s No. 1 team. Cabezas finished the regular season with an 11-6 record, including six ranked wins during her 2024 campaign after transferring from Iowa State.
