Through different mediums of delivery, branding and a constantly rotating staff, The Daily Beacon has had many looks throughout its history.
One constant has been our motto: “The editorially independent student newspaper of The University of Tennessee.”
What does that mean?
To us, it means to be the independent institution on campus responsible for providing a voice to students and faculty, publishing reliable and relevant news to the community and upholding freedom of expression.
Next year, we’ll continue that enduring mission. The way we deliver it will not.
The Beacon operates in a digital-first environment. To remain useful and effective, we will move faster, publish smarter and meet readers where they are — without compromising the values that define this institution.
Our writers will focus on covering decisions made in student government, university administration and the state legislature that affect students. We will report quickly on emerging stories, provide clear, accessible coverage of complex issues and be the paper of record on campus life.
As much as a newspaper needs readers, we need engagement from the community. When you have a question about something on campus, ask us. When you know something you believe the community should know as well, tell us. A newspaper at its best is constantly interacting with those it serves.
Our responsibility is to get it right — to report accurately, fairly and with purpose. That standard will not change.
