The No. 18 Tennessee men’s golf team had a strong showing at the Cabo Collegiate with a solid final round Tuesday, finishing tied for fourth at the Twin Dolphin Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The Vols finished the tournament at 8-under par, tying with No. 13 Ole Miss in a competitive field that featured 10 nationally ranked programs. Tennessee improved throughout the tournament, posting rounds of even par followed by back-to-back 4-under performances to climb the leaderboard on the final day.
No. 11 Oklahoma State won the tournament with a score of 22-under par, narrowly beating host No. 9 Arkansas, who finished one stroke behind at 21-under par. Rice finished third at 10-under, with Tennessee and Ole Miss rounding out the top five.
The Vols consistent play across the lineup helped them remain near the top of the leaderboard throughout the tournament.
Sophomore Jackson Herrington led Tennessee, finishing 6-under par, tying for sixth individually. Herrington delivered the Vols’ lowest round of the tournament in the second round with a 4-under 67, highlighted by five birdies on the front nine.
Senior Josh Hill also finished under par scoring 3-under for the tournament, finishing tied for 11th individually. Hill’s final round 2-under par performance proved crucial in helping maintain Tennessee’s position on the leaderboard, the Dubai native posting four birdies on the back nine.
Freshman Luke Smith contributed a 1-over par performance, highlighted by a 2-under final round. Smith finished the tournament tied for 25th individually. Similar to Hill, Smith also scored four birdies on the back nine, helping the Vols close the tournament strong.
Senior Lance Simpson finished at 5-over par for the tournament, posting an even-par second round. Junior Bruce Murphy rounded out the Tennessee lineup finishing 7-over. He opened the tournament scoring 2-under, the Vols’ lowest score of the first round.
Competing as an individual, freshman Chase Kyes delivered a strong performance for Tennessee. Kyes finished the tournament tied for 17th, shooting back-to-back 2-under rounds to open the tournament.
As a team, the Vols showed improvement each day. In an event that featured several ranked teams including, Tennessee remained in contention throughout the tournament. This performance continues a strong stretch for the Vols this spring as they build momentum heading toward the SEC and NCAA championships.
Tennessee will have a week off before returning to action March 16-18 at the Pauma Valley Collegiate in Pauma Valley, California.
