Changes happened fast for Tennessee men’s tennis.
In the second leg of a doubleheader, the Vols defeated Belmont 6-1. After losing to Oklahoma earlier in the afternoon, the Vols were able to snap a four-match losing streak.
All day, head coach Chris Woodruff switched things up. Whether that was the debut of freshman Woodson McMillin or new doubles pairings, there were plenty of new sights in Sunday’s match.
To start doubles, Alejandro Moreno and Dragos Cazacu thought they set the tone early in a dominant first game. Stefan Vedovelli and Sabi Roi of Belmont did not let that get to them as they won all of their service games. A late break in the ninth game gave the Bruins their advantage as a simple service game upset Moreno and Cazacu, 6-4.
Ethan Muza and Boruch Skierkier got into trouble early. Belmont’s Will Ecklund and Charlie Robin had a love break in the very first game. The Belmont pair kept their dominance going, achieving a second break to clinch the match, 6-3.
Shion Itsusaki and fellow freshman McMillin matched up against the Bruins’ Eli Mizerski and Morgan Woodson. Itsusaki and McMillin fared well, getting an impressive sixth game victory in deuce.
Unfortunately, the match would go unfinished as Belmont clinched the doubles victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
The momentum from Belmont was short-lived, although Tennessee still has questions that need to be answered on the doubles front.
To start singles, Court 1 saw the Vols’ Jose Garcia, who, before the Oklahoma match, was riding a seven-match singles win streak. Surprisingly, No. 58-ranked Moreno did not see the court for singles for the nightcap — Tennessee’s typical No. 1.
Robin represented Belmont and started the first game up 40-0. Garcia was able to battle back. He broke to open his match and cruised the rest of the way in the first set, 6-1.
After being broken to open the second set, Garcia could not get back on serve as he lost the second set, 4-6. In the third set tiebreak, Garcia seemed to have control. Having three match points while up 9-6, Garcia could not capitalize. Robin won three straight to force a deuce. Garcia slowed his opponent’s momentum quickly as he won the next two points, winning him the match 6-1, 4-6, 1 (11)-0 (9). It was the longest and most tense matchup of the day, but in the end, Garcia got the job done.
Cazacu faced Vedovelli in a tough matchup. The box score might not show it, but it took a lot for Cazacu to win this one. Vedovelli threatened in every game in the first set. That was until a fourth game break for Cazacu. Then he had a love hold to win the first frame. A single break in each set helped Cazacu take the match in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.
Jan Kobierski saw action on Court 3 facing Roi. Kobierski looked really sharp, taking control of this match early on. With two early breaks in the first set, Kobierski shut Roi down. It was much of the same in the second set as Kobierski won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Piotr Sieknowicz got a singles nod against Woodson. He looked rusty to begin, but quickly turned things around. After being broken in his first service game, Sieknowicz avoided a 0-30 hole in his second service game, rattling off four straight points. He would then get a pair of breaks to win the set 6-2. In the second set, Woodson stood no chance. Kobierski came out strong and dominated, winning his match 6-2, 6-0.
Itsusaki entered this singles match having only one loss coming Friday against Auburn. He faced Mizerski, looking to get back on track. Itsusaki showed Friday was a fluke as he lost just two games across both sets played. Even with a fierce game three break in deuce, there was little emotion from Itsusaki. There were a few fist pumps, though. He kept his composure the whole way through as he won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Muza drew Bautista Durrels Rojo in his match. Similar to the other matches for the Vols, Muza had major success. His serve was not threatened often as he swept the first set 6-0. After starting up big in the second set, Durrels Rojo tried to fight his way back, but ultimately could not as Muza won the match 6-0, 6-3.
The Vols’ next match will be Friday, March 6, in Starkville against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
