On Jan. 20, the chilly chambers of the Student Government Association’s senate welcomed its senators back from a restful winter break. The first day of class was accompanied by the 11th senate session which featured organization updates and general housekeeping to prepare for the new semester ahead.
Making M.A.G.I.C
Associate Dean of Students Joe Pierce initiated the session with words of encouragement and advice to the senators as they stepped into the spring semester. During open town hall, Pierce emphasized the importance of cultivating effective partnerships — referred to as M.A.G.I.C — between the senate, student body and school administrations in order to produce the most effective legislation.
M.A.G.I.C., an acronym, encourages senators to Map the landscape to better understand the issues their legislation will address, Align with stakeholders to build strong connections, Generate solutions as a team, Integrate feedback and impact, and Champion change to take action in making legislation a reality.
Updates from executives
Cade Simmons, chief lobbyist, updated the senate on Resolution 25-1, the SDS Accommodation Awareness Resolution, sponsored by Sen. Alli Conkle and Student Disability Services. This resolution, which called to amend the campus-wide syllabus in regards to academic accommodations, was officially implemented. Additionally, the resolution will be added to the staff newsletter with the hopes that professors will integrate these changes into their course syllabuses.
In addition to Resolution 25-1, other legislation such as the 2026 Election Rules and Procedures have taken effect.
