After opening during last semester’s finals, the Krispy Kreme on Cumberland Avenue has become a popular spot for a quick sugar fix. This new Krispy Kreme is no ordinary doughnut shop, however, as it is the first Krispy Kreme in Knoxville to serve ice cream.
I stopped by the doughnut shop to try out some of their ice cream the other day to see how it compares to the rest of their sweets.
That being said, calling these offerings “ice cream” is a bit of a stretch. I went in expecting the classic ice cream experience with some doughnut flair, but instead got milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches.
The milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches do have a special Krispy Kreme flair, however. Milkshakes are all served with a mini doughnut around the straw, and the “sandwich” part of the ice cream sandwiches are doughnuts.
This might sound like an abundance of sugar and sweetness — and that’s because it is.
I got my ice cream sandwich first. Krispy Kreme calls them “Scoop Sandwiches” and they consist of a scoop of ice cream and some toppings mushed between two glazed doughnuts. They offer six different flavors: Vanilla Fruity Crunch, Triple Chocolate, Chocolatey Caramel Coconut, Cookies and Kreme, Vanilla Sprinkled and Vanilla Chip.
I decided to try out the Cookies and Kreme Scoop Sandwich, and after two bites I already felt like it was a little bit too much sugar. The ice cream goes well with the glazed doughnuts, but the toppings were light, and I could barely taste them.
After finishing the Scoop Sandwich, I felt like I would barf if I took another bite.
And it was at that moment that my milkshake came out.
Krispy Kreme has fairly traditional milkshakes. The flavors they offer include: Classic Strawberry, Double Chocolate, Salty Caramel, Oreo Cookies and Kreme and Vanilla Glazed.
I’m a sucker for chocolate, so I ordered the Double Chocolate milkshake. It took a few minutes for me to be able to actually drink the shake, as it was too frozen to come up the straw. They don’t have any spoons for customers, so there was no way for me to eat it for the first few minutes.
By the time I was able to drink it, I was very surprised. The drink was less sweet than I was expecting, which was actually a good thing. The shake was very heavy and thick, which made it very filling. After eating just one Scoop Sandwich, I couldn’t even finish my milkshake. There was simply too much sugar.
Even though I feel like I nearly entered a sugar coma, these treats are good for what they are. At around $4.50 for the milkshake and $3.50 for the Scoop Sandwich, I definitely recommend these if you want a cold alternative to Krispy Kreme’s doughnuts.
Do not, however, eat them both at the same time. You may die from a sugar overdose.
