The Muslim Student Association, in conjunction with Amnesty International, will be holding a candlelight vigil tonight for the child victims of the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
Students will meet at the International House at 7:30 p.m. where they will walk to the torchbearer for the vigil.
According to MSA member Zach Dewerff, the event is not meant to make students take a side in the conflict.
The fact that schoolchildren are getting shot is upsetting, Dewerff said. We really want everybody to come out and raise awareness about that.
Dewerff said it was important for students of all races and religions to come together and unite.
It’s important to come together, especially because what people hear about the conflict is very partisan due to the media.
Rosalind Gwynne, the advisor for the MSA, said the vigil is just what students need at this time in the conflict.
What the students are doing is setting just the right tone that is needed to solve the problem, Gwynne said. It is putting the emphasis on compassion and love.
Some students do not see an end to the killing in sight, Dewerff said.
We see people killing each other in an endless cycle, Dewerff said. We want it to stop.
The purpose of Amnesty International is to work for the release of prisoners of conscience: men, women, and children detained anywhere for their beliefs, color, sex, ethnic origins, language or religion.
