In an effort to show its commitment to the community and the University of Tennessee campus, the Mu Zeta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority is holding Delta Week 2000.
The group has volunteered at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Knoxville, supported the Black Cultural Programming Committee’s Rubin Hurricane Carter lecture Monday and held a financial planning workshop at the YWCA Tuesday afternoon.
Delta Sigma Theta now plans to hold a multi-cultural event with salsa lessons from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. tonight in the Panhellenic Building.
According to chapter President Tyrhonda Phinnessee, the sorority is a thriving force on campus.
Since the founding in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has striven to make a positive contribution to its community, Phinnessee said.
On Thursday the sorority will hold an empowerment night with soul food from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the International House.
The sisters will also sponsor a stress management workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the University Center Plaza.
Delta Sigma Theta strives everyday to help make a change and benefit individuals, Phinnessee said.
Mu Zeta’s commitment to providing service has compelled us to embark on Delta Week 2000.
Phinnessee said the strength of the sorority is its sisterhood and its strong Christian principles.
[We] are committed to scholarship, public service and sisterhood, Phinnessee said.
Delta Sigma Theta was founded in 1913 at Howard University. The Mu Zeta chapter at UT was inaugurated in 1975.
The legacy of my sorority stands as a tribute to its 22 founders and more than 195,000 members, Phinnessee said.
