There is a lot more to residence hall life than eating, sleeping and going
to class.
The United Residence Halls Council wants to prove this by putting on “A
Midwinter’s Night” semi-formal dance for all residence hall students.
The URHC-sponsored dance will be held at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Knoxville
Museum of Art.
All residence hall students are invited, and they may bring one guest of
their choice, not necessarily a student. Tickets are $5 per person.
Galen Johnson, chairman of “Midwinter’s Night,” said the dance is open only
to dorm residents and a guest for safety reasons.
“Because of things going on on campus lately, we have to be careful of
security,” he said.
Johnson said the idea for the dance came from suggestions from council
representatives and students living in the residence halls.
“The URHC wants to supplement life in the residence hall experience,” he
said. “We always want to do things for residents.”
Johnson said the Knoxville Museum of Art is the perfect place for the
dance.
“At the KMA, it feels like you’ve stepped into a classy 1940s Hollywood
type of ball,” he said. “It’s almost magical this season.”
URHC President Sarah Sanders said students can pick up a registration form
for the dance at any residence hall. The form can be returned with the
money to the dorm’s front desk.
Initial reaction to the dance is positive, Sanders said.
“The people I’ve talked to have been really excited about the whole thing,”
she said.
Proceeds from the T-shirt and ticket sales for the dance will go to sponsor
other URHC events. “A Midwinter’s Night” is a nonalcoholic affair, and a
shuttle service will be available to transport participants.
