It’s safe to say that Tennessee guard Dalton Knecht has solidified himself in the history of Tennessee basketball in his short time here.
On Monday, Knecht was named the Naismith Player of the Week and the SEC Player of the Week after his performances in the victories over Florida and Alabama. This was the fifth-year senior’s second straight week earning the SEC accolade. He added USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.
The Naismith honor is awarded each week to the nation’s best player.
The 6-foot-6, 213-pound guard tallied a career-high 39 points against Florida, his third 35-plus showing of the season. This feat has only been accomplished five other times in Tennessee’s history.
The performance followed a 36-point effort in a comeback win at Georgia, giving Knecht back-to-back 35-plus games. The last SEC player to accomplish the feat was Shaquille O’Neal at LSU in 1991.
The Northern Colorado transfer has been in steady conversation for the Wooden Award, college basketball’s most prestigious annual recognition. Knecht’s name has been mentioned along with other candidates, such as Purdue’s Zach Edey, North Carolina’s RJ Davis and Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson.
Naturally, national attention in the media brings attention from opponents, SEC and beyond. Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes addressed this in his Alabama post-game press conference.
Barnes has been around talent like Knecht before, particularly in his time coaching Kevin Durant at Texas. Barnes even went so far as to liken his star guard to Durant. Durant has also spoken up on social media, commenting on a Tennessee basketball Instagram post showcasing Knecht in the Georgia game.
With the spotlight of the nation and now the NBA on the Thornton, Colorado, native, Knecht will look to continue to meet the now high expectations he is relied on to produce on a game-by-game basis and help lead the Vols deep into the month of March.
Tennessee will face Vanderbilt in Nashville on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
