Tennessee basketball forward Jonas Aidoo has been named SEC Player of the Week following dominant performances against Arkansas and Vanderbilt.
Aidoo scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Vols 92-63 win over Arkansas. The 6-foot-11, 240-pound big man also had success against Vanderbilt where he scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He also finished with eight blocks in that contest.
Combined, he had 34 points in 20 rebounds between the two games.
Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes wasn’t pleased with the lack of getting the ball to Aidoo in the win.
“We worked hard with trying to get him more involved,” Barnes said. “And I think we took three straight threes there at one time without any thought of putting the ball (inside) to give him a chance to play a little bit. And what he does is not easy. And we talked about it enough, really and truly, that we’ve got guys that can shoot and we expect them to shoot when they’re open.
“But at some point in time — I think we missed a couple in a row — we had talked about getting (Aidoo) more involved, and we lost sight of that.”
The team has gone as Aidoo has gone for most of the 2023-24 season thus far. He currently averages 11.7 points per game in 24.4 points per game. He is also grabbing 7.5 rebounds per game.
Tennessee moved up to No. 5 in the AP Poll following the Vols’ undefeated week in which Aidoo led the way.
