Tennessee men’s golf saw its SEC title hopes stall at Sea Island Golf Club, finishing 13th and missing the cut for match play after three rounds of stroke play.
The Vols closed the tournament at 4-under-par, well outside the score needed to advance to match play. The cutline finished at 12-under, leaving the Vols eight shots shy of continuing their week.
The Vols entered the final round at 9-under with ground to make up, but were unable to generate momentum during the round. A 5-over performance dropped the Vols down the leaderboard, pushing them further from the match play cut.
Senior Josh Hill led the way for the Vols, finishing at 4-under. Hill posted multiple rounds under par, including a 3-under round two with four birdies on his card. Hill was the only Vol who didn’t shoot over par for the three rounds of play. Hill finished tied for 24th individually.
Senior Lance Simpson finished at 1-under after shooting multiple rounds over par. Simpson’s week was highlighted by an impressive 5-under round two performance. Simpson carded six birdies, including four birdies in five holes on the back nine. Simpson finished tied for 38th individually.
Freshman Chase Kyes finished at 1-over, tied for 45th individually. Kyes started the tournament strong, posting a 1-under round one with four birdies. Kyes was able to birdie his final hole of the tournament to finish an even par round three.
Junior Bruce Murphy finished the tournament at 5-over. Murphy carded the Vols’ lowest score of the opening round with a three-birdie 2-under performance. Murphy flashed moments of solid play, but a difficult final round prevented him from moving up the standings.
Sophomore Jackson Herrington rounded out the Vols lineup with a 6-over score for the tournament. Herrington recorded multiple birdies in all three rounds, but was unable to shoot under par in any of the three rounds.
Auburn captured the stroke play title at 39-under, highlighted by No. 1 Amateur Jackson Koivun shooting 19-under across the three rounds. Florida would follow at 33-under, and Texas at 30-under, in a tournament that featured several of the nation’s top-ranked programs, including 10 teams ranked in the top 20.
While the Vols’ finish falls short of expectations, they will now await their postseason fate as they look ahead to NCAA Regional selections. With multiple players showing flashes of low-scoring ability throughout the spring season, the Vols will aim to regroup and look to extend their season beyond the regionals.
The men’s golf regional selection show will be on the GOLF Channel on Wednesday, May 6.
