If not, you can learn more by attending the International House, which
will be sponsoring the India Semester for those University of Tennessee
students and community members wishing to take advantage of its rich and
diverse culture.
Mayor Victor Ashe will open the ceremony with remarks today at 7:30 p.m.
in the International House Great Room.
Ashe, who has been to India, will be speaking on “India: A Changing
Country.” He will also be joined by Chancellor Bill Snyder and other
campus officials.
Joseph Flory, associate director of the Center for International Education,
considers the India Semester one of many educational opportunities students
and the community can take advantage of.
“Students will benefit by experiencing some of the unique and diverse
aspects of Indian culture,” Flory said.
Furthermore, Flory said because the program lasts throughout the semester,
students will have various opportunities to learn more about India. There
is a unique learning experience students will get from this program.
“This program is unique in that it brings together students from
India, American students with Indian heritage, UTK faculty with expertise
on India, and American students,” Flory said.
Several programs offered during India Semester include guest speakers,
films, musicals, and dancing, as well as book discussions.
If you have never tried Indian food, mark your calendar for the I-House
on April 1 for the India Culture Night.
“There will be a variety of dishes available to taste, cooked by
students from India,” Flory said.
There is a nominal fee for the food. All other events are free to the
public.
India was chosen as a cultural program because of the large number of
Indian students, faculty and staff at the University. China was selected
for the first cultural program, which was offered last fall.
