The International Mentor Program is now accepting applications from any
University of Tennessee student who would like to help new international
students become familiar with UT campus life and promote cultural
exchange.
The International Mentor Program, which is in its second year, helps with
the transition of campus life.
Phuong Nguyen,program coordinator, hopes students familiar with UT campus
life will take full advantage of the program.
“This is a great chance for students to learn more about a different
culture and the diversity that exist on campus,” Nguyen said.
Last year when the program was offered there were more than 80 students
that submitted applications for the program.
Whether you enjoy, hiking, fishing or just communicating with someone from
a different country, the International Mentor Program team members will try
and match students together that have the same interest.
Joseph Flory, director of the Center for International Education, said the
program will help new students with special needs and give them some sense
of what life can be like with the help of a mentor.
“New international students have special needs and challenges that require
assistance in learning about a new culture on campus,” Flory said.
Not only will the program give students from a different country a better
understanding of what campus life is like, but a new friendship can
evolve.
“American students can make a life-long friend assisting a new
international student during the first few weeks of the semester,” Flory
said.
Furthermore, this is a great opportunity for students to discover a new
culture they would otherwise never have the opportunity to visit.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to learn first hand from someone of that
country. American students can learn more about another culture,” Flory
said.
There are several designated areas, besides the I-House available for
applications. They include Clement Hall, Strong Hall, Greve Hall, Massey
Hall, Melrose Hall and Hess Hall. For further information contact the
