Graduation isn’t the end of our journey. Once the caps and robes come off, it’s time to put on some working shoes, take to the classifieds and find a job. That’s easier said than done in today’s economy. However, job hunting in the 21st Century doesn’t need to be a complete slog.
Here are a few places to consider when looking for a career.
STEM Fields
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Long-term job growth is hard to measure, but recent information shows that you shouldn’t discount moving to Harrisburg. With an average of 114 job openings, the Pennsylvania metro area has the most STEM job openings per-capita than any other American city.
San Jose, California
Maybe you prefer higher pay over job security. In that case, consider San Jose. STEM jobs in the Californian city average $11,798 in monthly earnings. Furthermore, 21% of San Jose’s total population works in STEM fields, so you wouldn’t be alone.
Houston, Texas
Similar to San Jose, Houston STEM jobs have the highest average median salary at $98,886 annually. Though that is only a median, meaning not every STEM employee earns that much, it does signify a healthy and growing STEM industry.
Arts
New York, New York
The young artist moving to New York City is basically a cliché by this point, but it’s one based in economic reality. The Big Fruit is home to the nation’s largest independent film industry and second largest film industry overall. Filmmaking hopefuls can find community and healthy competition, artist can find jobs as story boarders or animators and musicians can find work as composers and performers.
Outside the film scene, New York also has a fair selection of art galleries and music halls. Cliché though it may be, New York City is still the place to be for creatives.
Boston, Massachusetts
Home to the Berklee College of Music and the Massachusetts College of Arts, Boston is another major city for creative careers. The movie production scene isn’t as large as New York or Atlanta, but the city still offers opportunities for theatre and other visual art careers.
Austin, Texas
Texas isn’t the first place that comes to mind when thinking on art jobs. However, it’d be wise to counter that thought-process as soon as possible. Austin features a vibrant arts scene. Not only is it home to large scale film and video productions companies, it’s also home to the South by Southwest film, music, game and media conference.
Medical
Houston, Texas
The Texas Medical Center is the world’s largest medical research and healthcare institution. As such, the major Texan metropolitan area sees constant increases in job growth for medical fields. With a workforce that large and more firms on top to transfer or enter into, Houston’s a great option for the medical working in need of a salary.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The City of Brotherly Love is also the City of Biomedical and Pharmacy Firms. Philadelphia’s been a major player in national health and wellness industries ever since Benjamin Franklin establish the nation’s first medical school within its bounds. Whether its research or practice, consider the cradle of revolution for your next home and workplace.
Baltimore, Maryland
Not only does Baltimore feature some of the nation’s lowest unemployment rates, it also features multiple opportunities for those seeking employment in healthcare or health education. This is due not only to its relationship with Washington, D.C, but also recent government initiatives to increased healthcare employment in the city. Take a look and see if Baltimore’s for you.
