Title: Madden NFL 2001
Platform: Sony PlayStation
Developer: EA Sports
The new lineup of John Madden football games shows off some new features and improvements in the latest incarnation, Madden NFL 2001.
One of the biggest complaints about sports games is that there is never enough detail given to design areas, such as stadium structure and the players themselves. This is one area where Madden 2001 shines. The game features detail on such an incredible level as to show off turf tape, wristbands and other player-specific accessories.
The extensive designs of the players are complemented by the detail given to all the backgrounds in the game. The graphics seem to push the PlayStation to its limits, but surprisingly there is virtually no load time between games.
Another outstanding feature in Madden 2001 is the audio content. Each stadium comes complete with a roaring crowd that performs ritual chants to go along with their home team. The announcers put in their part as well, although hearing the same comments over and over can become annoying.
As a nice little bonus, the player can unlock 50 of football’s greatest players and every All-Madden Team.
On the downside, play control has to be the one all-consuming and disappointing feature of Madden 2001. While it is quite easy to choose what plays to run, it is usually difficult to control the plays. Very often the quarterback must wait an eternity before attempting a passing play, which often results in a loss of yardage for the player.
Madden NFL 2001 is published by EA Sports and is available for the Sony PlayStation at a suggested retail price of $39.99.
