Don’t Look Back , a documentary about Bob Dylan recently released on
DVD, takes a closer look at Dylan and contains a few extras as well.
The documentary lets the audience tag along with Dylan on his last concert
tour as a solo acoustic performer. The film follows Dylan through a
three-week tour in England during the summer of 1965.
Don’t Look Back has to be one of the best documentaries about a
musician ever put on film. It gives a personal look at Dylan both on and
off the stage. It shows the downtime between shows and what events
realistically occurred in his life in which Dylan spoke out about the
meaning of his music and why he believed fans adored him.
One of the best things about DVDs is the extra content not present on VHS.
Don’t Look Back contains plenty of special features. Not only does
the DVD include the director’s cut of the film, but it also contains five
original, uncut audio performances that were recorded on the tour. Also
contained in the film are cast and crew biographies, and a discography of
Dylan.
The live performances are excellent and sound better than ever with the
digital transfer incorporated into DVDs. Another extra included on the film
is an audio commentary with director D. A. Pennebaker and tour manager Bob
Neuwirth. The commentary offers up some insight into not only the film’s
production but also into events happening in the music world at the
time.
Contrary to the popular belief that documentaries are boring, Don’t Look
Back offers a deep insight into what made Dylan into a pop culture icon.
It’s definitely a success worth checking out.
