The 59th Annual Student Art Competition, titled “eLIXir: A Dose of Student Art,” will be on view in the Ewing Gallery Feb. 26 through March 16.
The entries will be placed in three categories: art history, fine arts and graphic design.
The competition is open to “any student currently enrolled in the university,” Sam Yates, director of the Ewing Gallery, said. “In the past $7,000 in money or equivalents has been awarded.”
There will be a $500 award to the top finisher in each category. The deadline for art history entries is 4 p.m. on Feb. 8. Entries for the fine arts and graphic design categories will only be accepted on Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Entries will be accepted in the Ewing Gallery in the Art and Architecture Building Room 115.
The entry fee is $5 per submission, with a limit of three entries per student and two entries per category. Each entry will be eligible for one award.
The exhibit will open with a reception and awards ceremony with the announcement of the winners on Feb. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. The reception will be free and feature live music and food. The graphic design/illustration juror will be Brian Stone. He will present a public lecture on Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Art and Architecture Building Room 109.
Joe Fyfe, former UT Artist-in-Residence, will judge the fine arts category. He will present a public lecture on Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Diane Wolfthal, professor of art history at Arizona State University, will be the art history juror.
“The judges were recommended by different faculty,” Yates said.
“This is one of the longest running student art competitions,” Adam Alfrey, model and exhibit preparator for the Ewing Gallery, said. “Every aspect of it, from its organization to the approval of the jurors, is governed by the students.”
The Ewing Gallery is located at 1715 Volunteer Boulevard.
