A high llama will be at the Pilot Light tonight at 9 when Sean O’Hagan performs.
He began his musical journey in the band Microdisney in 1980 and continued with the group until it broke up in 1988.
Shortly after the disbandment, O’Hagan put out a solo effort called High Llamas. The name of the album might be misleading without the visual effect of the album cover to back it up, which features two llamas riding high in the sky in the basket of a hot air balloon.
His new musical efforts led O’Hagan to form a new band, naming it the High Llamas after his album.
O’Hagan has a definite musical style that distinguishes him from the vast hordes of pop music artists out there, managing to retain a modern pop music feel without any of the synthesized beats and overwhelming bass that has dominated the pop music world in the last decade.
The second track on High Llamas, “Edge of the Sun,” is a good example of his musical style at its very best. It features some haunting background vocals that support a pop gem, which tells a story.
Most of O’Hagan’s work revolves around the song telling a story, a concept lost in much of the music world today.
The High Llamas may remind listeners of the story songs from the Beach Boys’ album Pet Sounds. In many ways O’Hagan’s music is reminiscent of Brian Wilson’s work, but at the same time entirely different.
Tickets are $6.
