It is football time again in Tennessee, but it will not be UT taking the
field this time.
It will be four fraternity teams in the 8th annual Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Spring Football Classic this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Fulton Bottoms
rugby field across from Tyson Park.
The contest will be full contact, consisting of two games, SAE v. Sigma
Chi, and Pi Kappa Alpha vs. Kappa Sigma. The two winners will each name a
most valuable player and receive trophies.
The event raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and provides
participants and fans with a chance to cheer on their favorite
fraternities.
Mark Parker, event chairman, said the object of the game is to have fun and
relive former glory days.
“For some of us, it’s like reliving what we had in high school,” he said.
“Win or lose, it’s a lot of friends out there having fun.”
Jim Alexander, co-chairman said the event creates a rivalry between
competing fraternities that is all in good spirit.
“It’s great to go out that night and see somebody and say, ‘I stuck you,’ ”
he said.
This year’s contest will also provide an opportunity for Kappa Sig to score
a touchdown, which they have never done in a game, Parker said.
About 75 percent of the money raised from $3 admission tickets and t-shirt
sales goes to the MDA. The football classic will give the organization at
least $2,000 this year, Parker said.
This year, as in years past, about 500 to 1,000 fans are expected to
attend. The event was held in Neyland Stadium until the artificial turf was
replaced with grass, facilitating too much upkeep to be used by the
fraternities.
Last year, SAE beat Kappa Sig and the Pikes beat Sigma Chi. MVPs were Chris
Valhos from SAE and Charlie Shanks from Pi Kappa Alpha.
