This Labor Day Weekend finds Knoxville with entertainment choices across
the city. The big event is Monday: Boomsday, the Arts Council’s annual
mega-huge fireworks display, sponsored by U-102. Festivities go on all day,
and the fireworks go off at 9 p.m. The display can be viewed from almost
anywhere near downtown, but the prime spot is said to be near Calhoun’s On
the River.
Tonight:
Popular hip-hop band L.I.F.E. appears with Memphis rockers D.D.T. at the
Mercury Theatre on Market Square. D.D.T. (Dickinson, Dickinson and Taylor)
are a band of talented teenagers from Memphis. The guitarist and drummer
are sons of veteran Memphis producer Jim Dickinson. Admission is $5.
Bill Wharton and the Ingredients appear at Lucille’s at 10 p.m. Find out
why they call Wharton “The Sauce Boss.” The band will be performing
Saturday night as well.
Nashville’s heavy alternative Soulskins will appear with special guests
tonight at Flamingo’s on the Strip. Soulskin performed here this past
summer with the band 311. Admission tonight is $4.
Ray-O-Vacs will surf the attic at Zarbo’s at 10 p.m. This show is
free.
Blackfoot brings classic Southern Rock to the Tennessee Amphitheatre at 8
p.m.
El Vez, the Mexican Elvis, will perform with The Useless Playboys at
Amigo’s in the Old City. There are two shows, at 10 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
Admission is $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
Amelia Earhart Returns will appear at Manhattan’s at 10 p.m. Admission is
$3.
Film:
Letter to Brezhnev is showing at the Knoxville Museum of Art at 8
p.m. This is the fifth and final film in Betsy Pickle’s “Pickle’s Picks”
series.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be celebrated once again this
evening. As always, Brad and Janet will arrive at Powell Cinema at
midnight.

Saturday, Sept. 3, Neowizard and Fat Bastard do good deeds at the Mercury
Theatre by holding their own music festival: “Foodstock.” Proceeds will
benefit Knox Area Resue Missions. Anyone bringing canned food for donation
will get $1 off admission. The show starts at 10 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m.,The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will perform
“Pops in the Park” at the Tennessee Amphitheatre. Concessions open at the
World’s Fair Park at 2 p.m.
Sunday night at 9 p.m. on 90.3 WUTK-FM, Radio Free Theatre presents “Derek
Whittaker’s Labor Day House of Work.”
Monday at Manhattan’s Club Eclectic, Nashville’s “hardcore acid jazz” group
Loppybogymi perform at 10 p.m. Admission is $4.
Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 10 p.m. the Mary Pranksters and Blakey St. John will
perform at the Library on the Strip. Admission is $3.
For New Rock 90 Nite, Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 10 p.m. at the Mercury
Theatre, The Opposable Thumbs, featuring Todd Steed of Smokin’ Dave fame,
will make their debut. Opening the show will be Ramblin’ Roy and the
National Inbreeding Finalists. Admission is $4, or $3 with college ID or
MAK card.
Wednesday, Sept. 7, the “homegrown psychedelic boogie” group known as Other
People will perform at Flamingo’s on the Strip at 10 p.m. Admission is
$4.
Thursday, Sept. 8, The Dingos perform their “congo rock and roll” at the
Bombay Bicycle Club, 6300 Papermill Road. Admission is $3.
