The Arts Council and Fox 43 TV are sponsoring the Second Annual First Light
Dance Theatre Choreographer’s Showcase at 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday
at the Tennessee Amphitheatre. The showcase includes premiers by several
local choreographers, highlighting the creativity of Knoxville’s dance
makers. This weekend’s performance will also feature live music.
The First Light company will dance to a selection titled “Water Spirit,”
provided by the group Farr Horizons. The trio perform a dreamy, lyrical
style of music on Celtic harp, cello and flute.
“It will probably surprise many people who thought they already knew the
type of things First Light does,” said Greg Larson, co-director of the
First Light company. “This dance is an exploration of how many intriguing
shapes you can make with four bodies moving in slow motion.”
“It’s a moving sculpture that invites the audience to dive into the music,”
adds Julia Gillis Larsen, co-director and choreographer of the dance.
Singer-songwriter Jeff Reed, who normally acts as First Light’s stage
manager, will perform the song “Life in Prism,” a bluesy ballad about a man
with too many loves. The dancers perform a literal interpretation of the
song, choreographed in a “sleek, jazzy style” by Julia Larson.
Tickets for the Showcase are $10 for adults, $5 for for students, children
and senior citizens. They are available in advance at Java in the Old City,
the Knoxville Food Coop on North Broadway, the offices of the City Ballet,
and at the Amphitheatre before each performance.
