After the excitement of the always-extravagant Homecoming Parade, a deep
feeling of lethargy and boredom may set in amongst the UT community. But
never fear, because the fun doesn’t stop there. Knoxville may not be “The
City That Never Sleeps,” but we can certainly be “The City That Goes to
Sleep Really, Really Late.”
Best Things Going On:
This weekend’s feature film at the University Center is Strange
Brew, the hilarious cult classic featuring Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas
as Bob and Doug MacKenzie. Shows are at 7 and 9:30 p.m. tonight and
Saturday. Be there or you’re a hoser.
Tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre, The Viceroys
will perform their hot-rod Ford brand of Hank Williams, Sr,.
inspirations. It’s always a hootenanny with John Paul Keith and the boys.
The Mavericks are also performing. Admission is $15.
Rory Block performs tonight at the Laurel Theatre in a
concert which will be broadcast live on WUOT, 91.9 FM. Block
Mississippi Delta blues style comes highly recommended, with accolades from
the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal. The show begins at 8 p.m. and
admission is $10 for the general public ($11 day-of-show), $9 for Jubilee
Community Arts members and students, and $4 for children 6 to 12.
The UT Music Department’s Piano Series will present Noel
Engebretson, a professor of music from the University of Alabama. His
program will include Bach’s Organ Prelude and Fugue in D Major,
Beethoven’s Andante Favori and others. The concert is free and starts
at 8 p.m.
Hector Quirko will perform from 5:30 to 8 p.m. tonight at the
Knoxville Museum of Art’s Alive After Five series. Quirko is
one of Knoxville’s premier blues performers.
A special performance by former Sun Ra drummer Samurai
Celestial will be featured Saturday at Flamingo’s. The show begins
at 10 p.m. and also includes the Aquarium Rescue Unit and Free
Fourmula. Admission is $5.
Sandbox will hold its CD release concert at 9 p.m. Saturday at
the Mercury Theatre. Also performing will be Hypertribe and Cold
Water Flat. Tickets are $5 for patrons 18 and older, $7 if you’re 17 or
younger.
Second Best Things Going On:
Tonight:
S.F. Envelope and Pervis perform at the Mercury Theatre
tonight at $10 p.m. Admission is $5.
The Electric Ballroom holds a Death Metal Fest tonight at 8
p.m. The $5 show features Feat, Enter Self, The Uninvited, Labrynth,
and The Guff.
Uncle Mingo and a special surprise opening act will perform at
Flamingo’s tonight at 10 p.m. Admission is $4.
Saturday:
Hank Flamingo plays at the Library at 9 p.m. Admission is $7.
The aforementioned Viceroys continue touring the city, this time
rocking the house at Zarbo’s. As always, the show is free and starts
about 10 p.m.
The Alpha Phi Alpha Dance Party takes place at the
Electric Ballroom Saturday, October 1. Admission is advertised as “$2
before 11 p.m.”
Sunday:
James Taylor plays a big show at the Thompson-Boling arena Sunday,
Oct. 2. Tickets are $24.50 and $22.50, and are on sale at the usual

Exhibits:
Familiar Ground, a photography exhibit by Diane Fox and
David Andrews begins Saturday, October 1, at the Tomato Head
Restaurant. A reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 11 at the
restaurant.
Theatre:
The comedy Greater Tuna , starring Joe Sears and Ed Howard,
began showing last night at the Clarence Brown Lab Theatre. It runs
tonight and Saturday with shows at 10:30 p.m. each night.
