Sasquatch’s Asylum:
Halloween starts early this year at the Foundry on the Fair Site.
Beginning tonight, Knoxville’s premier alternative theatre troupe
Sasquatch will present its own kind of haunted house- the
Asylum.
“We’re creating an asylum,” says Meg Beach, actor and co-director of the
production. “When the audience enters, we consider them ‘admitted.'”
The all-original production will bring visitors (“patients”) completely
into the drama with what they have dubbed “Environmental Theatre.” Instead
of “theatre in the round,” they claim this style is “theatre in the
doughnut.” Scenes will take place all around the audience, as well as on
stage. There will be no seating, so audience members are asked to bring
blankets to sit on. However, everyone should be ready to move about to
follow the action.
“We encourage people to participate- move around and make noise,” says
Beach. “The scenes are set apart by lighting effects, so the audience may
suddenly find themselves in the middle of a scene.”
Opening each show will be performances by local bands such as Chug-a-lug
Donna, Free Barabbas, Or, and Terry Hill. Circle Modern Dance will also
participate. On Halloween night, Free Barabbas will gear their show towards
the theatrical themes of Sasquatch’s script.
The bands will begin at 8 p.m. tonight. Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and
Monday. There will be no show Saturday night. The play itself begins at 9
p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $6.66 per “patient,” and $13 per
couple.
Live Music Tonight:
Rotten Records’ artists Acid Bath perform tonight at the
Mercury Theatre, along with Knoxville headbangers The Guff
and Serene Scream. Acid Bath hail from the “outback swamps of the
Louisiana Bayou.” They call their hard-edged sound a “gumbo of hardcore,
gothic, psychedelic punk rock.” The show starts at 10 p.m.
Local band Freeway will perform their funky retro sounds at
Flamingo’s on Cumberland Avenue. The show starts at 10 p.m. and
tickets are $5.
Thursday Night Highlights:
Warren G and the Twins, Coolio, Heavy D and the Boys,
and R Kelly will perform a mega-huge rap and soul show Thursday
night at Thompson/Boling Arena. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets
are $25, which isn’t so much when you consider the acts being
presented.
On the other end of the MTV spectrum, Craw (from Cleveland, Ohio)
and Bliss will play at the Mercury Theatre Thursday
night. Craw’s last two albums were produced by mastermind Steve Albini. The
show starts at 10 p.m. and admission is $5.
Theatre Central:
The “Off Off Off Broadway” venue at 141 S. Gay Street presents the
mystery Ten Little Indians.. Unsuspecting guests are lured to
a deserted house on Indian Island. After being collectively accused of
murder, the guests begin getting killed one by one. The play will run
Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from Oct. 28 until December 17. Tickets
are $5 on Thursdays, $8 on Friday and Saturday. Students with ID pay $5 at
all performances. Reservations can be made by calling 546-3926
