Monday is Halloween, a holiday to celebrate scaring each other. It makes
one wonder what Pagans think about the commercialization of such an ancient
sacred day. Here are some weekend treats to get everybody’s minds off such
a perplexing question.
Special Events:
For something that isn’t scary, the UT Music Department is holding
their Bicentennial Signature Concert Saturday, October 29, at 8 p.m.
at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. The featured performer will be
renowned Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano, and 1979 UT graduate, Delores
Ziegler. The concert will also feature members of the Knoxville Opera
Company, apprentices and guest faculty members. There will be several
premier performances by UT composers. Conductors will include Kirk
Trevor, David Stutzenberger, James Sparks and
Cathy Leach. The concert will benefit the UTK Music
Scholarship fund. Ticket prices are $15, $20, and $30, and are availabe at

Tonight, Sunday, and Monday, Sasquatch presents The Asylum at
the Foundry on the Fair Site. This interactive theatre performance
offers audiences the chance to experience the drama from all sides-
“theatre in the doughnut.” There’s just no telling what could happen. Live
music acts include Chug-A-Lug Donna, Or, Free
Barabbas, and Terry Hill. Admission is $6.66 per person, or
$13 per couple. The music starts each night at 8 p.m. and the show begins
at 9 p.m.
Tonight:
Jubilee Community Arts presents Cajun band Mamou tonight at the
Laurel Theatre at 16th and Laurel. This “rip-roaring” band will be
sure to inspire Cajun two-step fever with their live show and their new CD,
Ugly Day. Admission is $10 for JCA members, $11
for general public in advance, $12 at the door, and $4 for children 6 to
12. Anyone who shows up in costume receives $1 off their ticket
price.
The Viceroys, one of Knoxville’s finest groups of fellows, play tonight
at the Mercury Theatre. Also appearing are The Rattlehounds.
The show starts at 10 p.m. and admission is $5.
The Floating Men perform tonight at 9 p.m. at Flamingo’s on
Cumberland Avenue. Admission is $5 at the door.
Revolution Block and Wicked Wicked Cow People are playing
tonight at the Library on Cumberland Avenue. The show starts at 10
p.m.
Bluegrass band 3rd Tyme Out are playing at the Electric Ballroom
tonight at 8 p.m. Admission is $10.
The Knoxville Museum of Art’s Alive After Five series continues
tonight with the Harold Nagge Group. The show begins at 5:30 p.m.
Admission is $5, or $2.50 for students.
Saturday:
A veritable music festival is happening at the Tennessee Amphitheatre
Saturday at 1 p.m. Benny Skyn, Black Velvet Dogs, Wade
Hill & Company, Big Daddy & the Blues Factory, Wrecking
Krew, J. Lawhorn Band and the Psychoderelicts will
perform at this afternoon show. Admission is $10.
Immortal Chorus will headline their annual Halloween concert at the
Electric Ballroom Saturday, October 29, at 8 p.m. Also appearing are
Hypertribe and Sandbox. Costumes are encouraged. The show is
all ages. Admission is $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
The Clintons will appear at the Mercury Theatre Saturday at
10 p.m.
Bouncing Souls and The Rehabs are playing Saturday at 7 p.m.
at Raven West. Admission is $3. The show is all ages.
Kings of the Killer Fish are performing at Flamingo’s on
Cumberland at 10 p.m. Saturday.
Venus Drive, Dag, and Illegal Grin will perform at the
Library at 10 p.m. Saturday.
Sunday:
Wendel Warner’s new jazz quartet WJAZ will perform Sunday,
October 30 at Lucille’s in the Old City. The show starts at 8:30 and
admission is$2.
Monday:
World famous Superdrag, along with the Ray-O-Vacs, will
play at the Mercury Theatre’s Halloween party. The occasion is also
the Mercury’s second anniversary. The show starts at 10 p.m. and admission
is $5.
Theatre:
Cotton Patch Gospel concludes its run Saturday, October 29, at
the Clarence Brown Theatre. Tickets are $18 for adults and $3 for
students with activity card. Shows are at 8 p.m.
Dracula also concludes its run this weekend at the Bijou
Theatre. The remaining shows will be tonight, Saturday, and Sunday at 8
p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25. A reception for Dracula
star Matthew Ashford will be held at Club Le Conte following the
Saturday night show.
The Cumberland County Playhouse is currently presenting two
productions. On the Mainstage they are featuring Thomas Wolfe’s Look
Homeward, Angel. In their Adventure Theatre, they have Smoke

will read at the Laurel Theatre Sunday, October 30, from 2 p.m. to 4
p.m.
