An older audience and a couple too many uninteresting openings made the The Black Cadillacs’ performance at the Bijou Theatre on Friday night less than memorable.
Johnny Astro and The Big Bang, a Knoxville-based band, started out the show. The group played a few rock ‘n’ roll songs off its latest album, “Monuments,” that the few people who had trickled in early were barely able to understand. It was almost impossible to understand a word they were singing. The hour of terrible music finally came to an end after introducing the next act.
By the time Sol Cat, a Nashville indie-rock band, hit the stage, more people could be seen flowing through the double doors leading into the theater. Sol Cat had a nice groovy, rock ‘n’ roll sound but still was not much better than Johnny Astro and The Big Bang. The group came to rely on a loud scream, which would cause everyone to jump, to keep the energy up.
The whole auditorium was shaking from how loud the two bands were. Most everyone enjoyed the concert, but it should be noted that they, unlike myself, were accompanied by a good drink in their hands.
Finally, 10 p.m. rolled around and The Black Cadillacs were taking the stage. The band members were dressed in all dark — well, everyone except the drummer who was wearing a white V-neck. Everyone in the room was on their feet cheering and screaming for the band they had been waiting all night for. By the time they began, the room was full of adoring fans.
The music started off slow and quiet and began to grow louder and louder, causing the audience’s excitement to grow along with it. Behind the band was a screen with what looked like water drops moving along with the music. It was creative and different from anything I have ever seen at a concert.
The band played some of its popular songs including “Choke,” “Find My Own Way” and “Radio Silence.” Although The Black Cadillacs are originally from Tennessee, the group has a very unique rock ‘n’ roll sound that is different from most of the music coming out of the state. I liked their sound, but it was not exactly my favorite kind of music, and having to sit through the two opening acts made it an extremely long night. I have always enjoyed going to concerts, and I have never been to a concert that was “too loud,” but there were actually a couple of times where I plugged my ears because I just couldn’t handle the noise.
If I ever get the urge to listen to them, I will have to just look them up online because I don’t think I will ever pay to watch them perform live. They were good, but not that good.
Even though the audience consisted of adults and older people, that did not stop the party; this concert was full of non-stop energy from the crowd. A huge positive of this concert was that it was held in the beautiful Bijou Theatre. It was also great that it was not a crazy concert, meaning it was enjoyable that there were not too many people crowding you.
All-in-all, an average Friday night.
