The Knoxville Police Department is investigating a suspected suicide outside of Stokely Hall, KPD communications manager Scott Erland confirmed to The Daily Beacon on Wednesday.
Around 12 p.m. on Oct. 30, the UT Police Department responded to reports of an unresponsive male student near the G16 parking garage off Volunteer Boulevard. They were joined by the Knoxville Police Department and an ambulance. After first responders arrived at the scene outside Stokely Hall, the student’s body was transported to the Regional Forensics Center for evaluation.
The student was identified, and his family has been contacted.
As of 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 30, KPD is investigating the incident as a suspected suicide. Erland said the university will take the lead on communicating any updates to the student body.
“The well-being of our students is always our top priority,” Kerry Gardner, UT’s director of media and internal relations, told the Beacon. “A loss like this is a terrible tragedy. As we move forward, Student Life will provide support and resources to impacted members of our campus community.”
Students in distress or those concerned about a student in distress can call the university’s 24-hour support line at 865-974-HELP. The Student Counseling Center offers therapy and crisis services.
This is a developing story. More updates will follow.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to remove the name of the student to minimize the family’s distress in notifying extended loved ones.
