Tennessee football enjoyed a bye week this past weekend as it sought to recuperate following its devastating loss against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Though most likely eliminated from the College Football Playoff, the Vols seek to improve to 7-3 on the season when they host the New Mexico State Aggies in their Homecoming and Salute to Service game.
Here’s how their opponents this season fared in Week 11.
Syracuse (Week 1 — Aug. 30)
Final Score: Syracuse 10, Miami 38
The Orange struggled on both sides of the football in Miami this past weekend.
Rickie Collins continued to struggle with two interceptions and taking six sacks while only completing 12-for-25 passes. The Orange did not score their first and only touchdown until there was less than a minute left in the game, which was simply far too late for a comeback.
The defense presented issues throughout, with only three tackles for loss and allowing 385 offensive yards. This is the Orange’s sixth-straight loss as they head into their bye week before traveling to Notre Dame on Nov. 22.
ETSU (Week 2 — Sept.6)
Final Score: ETSU 38, Samford 14
Following their bye week, the Buccaneers collected their second-straight win in an offensive explosion against the Samford Bulldogs. Devontae Houston led the rush game with 151 yards and two touchdowns, while Jacolby Criswell slung three touchdown passes.
Credit is also due to the defense, which held the Bulldogs to a single touchdown in each half, sealing ETSU’s fifth win. The Buccaneers travel to Western Carolina to face the 6-4 Catamounts this Saturday.
Georgia (Week 3 — Sept. 13) @ Mississippi State (Week 5 — Sept. 27)
Final Score: Georgia 41, Mississippi State 21
The battle of the Bulldogs took place this past Saturday, with Georgia emerging as the top dog in Starkville.
After letting up an early touchdown, Georgia put up 38 unanswered points on Mississippi State, with 24 of them being in the first half. Georgia dominated through the air and on the ground, with 264 pass yards and two touchdowns from Gunner Stockton, and an additional 303 rush yards and two rush touchdowns.
Overall, Mississippi State was lackluster in this matchup, with 322 total offensive yards, while the defense recorded no sacks on Georgia with only four tackles for loss.
Georgia seeks to extend their win streak to six this weekend when it hosts No. 10 Texas, while Mississippi State seeks bowl eligibility while traveling to No. 22 Missouri.
UAB (Week 4- Sept. 20)
Final Score: UAB 17, Rice 24
The Blazers received their second consecutive loss this past weekend when they traveled to Rice to take on the Owls. Though they led at the half, the Blazers were shut out in the second half while the Owls accumulated 10 more points to seal their victory.
The lack of defense in this game sends the Blazers to 3-6 as they prepare to host red-hot, 8-1 North Texas this weekend.
Arkansas (Week 7- Oct. 11)
Bye Week
Alabama (Week 8- Oct. 18)
Final Score: LSU 9, Alabama 20
Ty Simpson put up decent numbers with 277 passing yards and one touchdown. He missed some key plays on deep slings throughout.
Only allowing 13 first downs and 232 total yards on the day, the Tide’s defense suppressed Garrett Nussmeier and the Tiger offense, forcing them to only three field goals. Both offenses struggled throughout, but ultimately Alabama’s defense helped the Tide prevail and remain undefeated in conference play.
The Crimson Tide hosts Oklahoma on Saturday in hopes of continuing an eight-game win streak.
Kentucky (Week 9- Oct. 25) @ Florida (Week 13- Nov. 22)
Final Score: Florida 7, Kentucky 38
The Wildcats decimated the Gators in an interconference matchup last weekend, effectively diminishing the Gators’ hopes of a bowl appearance.
A struggling DJ Lagway threw three interceptions in the first half, leading the Gators to replace him with Tramell Jones Jr. in the second.
However, this replacement couldn’t hold off the explosive Wildcat offense, which threw for 168 yards with two touchdowns, and ran for 233 with three touchdowns.
Four Florida turnovers throughout the game ultimately did the Gators in, resulting in their sixth loss of the season and providing the Wildcats with their first home conference win since September of 2023.
The Gators travel to No. 6 Ole Miss this weekend while the Wildcats host Tennessee Tech.
Oklahoma (Week 10- Nov. 1)
Bye Week
New Mexico State (Week 12- Nov. 15)
Final Score: New Mexico State 21, Kennesaw State 24
The Aggie offense struggled against the Owls last weekend, with only 75 yards on the ground, while Logan Fife carried the offense with 241 yards in the air.
Despite his decent yardage, Fife struggled, throwing two interceptions, forcing one fumble and taking six sacks to give the Owls the edge. A missed 50-yard field goal by Ryan Hawk with 32 seconds left sealed the Owls’ victory.
The Aggies travel to Knoxville this weekend to face the No. 21 Vols.
Vanderbilt (Week 14- Nov. 29)
Final Score: Auburn 38, Vanderbilt 45 (OT)
Diego Pavia continued to lead the Commodores in passing and rushing this weekend in a nail-biting overtime victory against the Auburn Tigers.
After not scoring in the first quarter, the Commodores picked up 10 to go down by double digits at the half.
Rallying back from their deficit, the Commodores went up 38-30 on the Tigers before they scored a touchdown and two-point conversion to force overtime.
Pavia wasted no time and completed a pass to Cole Spence for a score after just three plays. The defense put a quick stop to the Tigers’ final drive, keeping the Commodores’ playoff hopes alive.
Vanderbilt will enjoy a bye week this week before hosting Kentucky on Nov. 22.
