Tennessee football’s devastating loss to Oklahoma left the Vols with a 6-3 record, effectively eliminating them from College Football Playoff contention.
Six wins place Tennessee in bowl eligibility with three games to play.
Here are some projections for the Vols’ postseason destinations from various outlets.
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach: ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Iowa (Tampa, Florida)
One of the tougher teams Tennessee could face, the Hawkeyes remain in the playoff bubble with an overall record of 6-2 and a conference record of 4-1.
Known for their elite second-ranked defense and disciplined play, the Hawkeyes would have the necessary tools to put up with Heupel’s offense. Recent NFL assets that have come from Iowa’s defensive masterclass program include cornerback Riley Moss, defensive end AJ Espenesa and recent Super Bowl champion cornerback Cooper DeJean.
This would be Tennessee’s fifth appearance in the ReliaQuest Bowl, their most recent being in 2016 when it was still called the Outback Bowl.
ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura: Duke’s Mayo Bowl vs. SMU (Charlotte, North Carolina)
Despite sitting at 6-3, SMU has enjoyed solid success in its conference, recording wins against Miami and Clemson.
Known for their physicality, the Mustangs have demonstrated persistence in key close games to position themselves well for the postseason.
If this projection holds, this would be Tennessee’s first appearance in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
CBS: Citrus Bowl vs. Michigan (Orlando, Florida)
With a record of 6-2 and a conference record of 5-1, Michigan remains on the playoff bubble. However, they are set to host undefeated Ohio State in its famous rivalry game, which could very well be detrimental to those aspirations.
This season, the Wolverines have been known for their extremely strong defensive line, which has recorded 34 sacks on the season thus far, ranking them among the top teams in the country. They also boast a strong rush defense, which would make the Vols rely on their pass game.
Tennessee struggles with stopping the run, the ground game being a dimension of the game that Michigan executes in.
If this matchup were to occur, it would likely be a difficult game for the Vols, even though they currently hold a 5-1 record across their six appearances in the Citrus Bowl.
USA Today: Music City Bowl vs. Illinois (Nashville, Tennessee)
The Fighting Illini have faced recent struggles with inconsistency in their offensive line, along with a lack of depth at wide receiver and fundamental challenges in the secondary.
As long as the Tennessee offense produces in this matchup, it should be able to pick up the win due to Illinois’ recent offensive struggles.
Sports Illustrated: Gator Bowl vs. Miami (Jacksonville, Florida)
Though Miami currently remains on the playoff bubble with a record of 6-2, the Hurricanes have lost two of their last three games while facing offensive inconsistency.
After beginning the season 5-0, Miami dropped two conference games, severely diminishing its chances at a national title. Quarterback Carson Beck continues to suffer significant issues at the helm. He has thrown seven interceptions this season, six of which were in two losses to Louisville and SMU. Those two losses were both sealed by interceptions thrown in the final moments of each game.
Although Miami demonstrates pass-rush excellence on opposing quarterbacks, issues with its own could be what would give the Vols an edge in this possible matchup.
