Tennessee women’s tennis hit a low point at South Carolina, losing 4-1.
The No. 33 Gamecocks (10-10, 3-9 SEC) snapped their seven-match losing streak against the No. 15 Lady Vols (11-7, 6-6 SEC) on Thursday, taking the doubles point and singles wins on courts 1, 2 and 6 in an upset victory.
Catherine and Audrey Aulia teamed up in doubles on Court 2, but struggled in their second outing as a tandem. South Carolina’s Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova took care of the Tennessee pair swiftly, winning 6-0.
South Carolina secured the doubles point as Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman, the nation’s No. 12 doubles pairing, took down Tennessee’s Francesca Mattioli and Vanesa Suarez 6-2 on Court 1.
Katrina Scott and Maeve Thornton held a 5-2 lead for the Lady Vols against Jane Dunyon and Sara Borkop on Court 3 when doubles play concluded.
The Gamecocks claimed the first point in singles play, as Dunyon defeated Audrey Aulia, 6-3, 7-5 on Court 6.
Then, South Carolina pushed the lead to 3-0 as Buchwald took down Suarez in straight sets, winning 6-3, 7(7)-6(2) on Court 2.
The Lady Vols drew closer after Mattioli took care of Stojanova on Court 5, winning 6-4, 6-3. That was the only good news for Tennessee, because shortly after, Scott would fall to Carnicella in straight sets on Court 1, 7 (7)-6 (4), 6-3, sealing the victory for the Gamecocks. Scott had 3-1 leads in both sets.
Catherine Aulia was starting her third frame after winning the first set 6-4, then losing the second 7-5. Leyla Britez Risso had won her second set 6-2 after blowing a 5-1 lead in her first set to lose that frame 7(7)-6(3).
After an upset loss, the Lady Vols’ chances of hosting a regional final as a top 16 team are in jeopardy. They will look to bounce back, but things don’t get any easier as they face the defending champion and top-ranked Georgia in Athens on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
