Tennessee women’s tennis didn’t lose a set in a 4-0 rout of Bellarmine.
The No. 12 Lady Vols (10-5, 5-4 SEC) took care of business Wednesday against the Knights (8-16, 0-0 ASUN), claiming the doubles point and singles wins on courts 1, 2, and 6.
It’s the Lady Vols’ second win in a row after a gutsy road win against Texas on Sunday that snapped a three-match losing streak.
“It gave us a ton of confidence,” Tennessee head coach Alison Ojeda of the win in Austin. “And so the team knew that they were going to come out and compete today, and I absolutely love the way our team came out here and just was solid from start to finish.”
Tennessee took care of doubles swiftly. Francesca Mattioli and Vanesa Suarez managed all areas of the court in a 6-1 victory over Bellarmine’s Reese Parker and Vendula Kryslova on Court 1. Maeve Thornton and Katrina Scott defeated Lillie Willis and Claudia Fuste by the same score on Court 3 to give the Lady Vols the doubles point. Catherine Aulia and Leyla Britez Risso were also up 5-1 on Court 2.
First off the court in singles was Britez Risso, who defeated Parker 6-0, 6-2 for her 12th singles win this dual season.
Then, Thornton made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Willis on Court 6. Thornton hadn’t played any singles matches this spring, but with her doubles partner Katrina Scott taking a rest from Court 1 and everyone else moving up, the junior slotted into the singles lineup.
“I wanted Maeve to see a little bit of singles,” Ojeda said. “She did an unbelievable job and just managed her tennis and had fun out there.”
Finally, Suarez triumphed over Kryslova on Court 1, 6-0, 6-2 to give the Lady Vols the victory. The win was Suarez’s second in a row after a big reverse sweep victory on Sunday at Texas.
“She was super focused from start to finish,” Ojeda said of Suarez.
Mattioli was up 5-0 in her second set after winning her first set 6-3. Catherine Aulia was down 3-2 in her second after winning her first 6-3, and Audrey Aulia was up 4-0 after winning 6-3 in her first frame.
The Lady Vols pick up their 10th win of the season before diving back into the grind of SEC play for the rest of the season. They stay home to face No. 11 Vanderbilt on Friday, March 27, at 5 p.m. ET.
