PHILADELPHIA — The Cinderella story was shot out of the gym. Now, Tennessee basketball faces a high-major challenge in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Fresh off a 22-point win over the proclaimed America’s team in Miami (Ohio), the Vols are treated with No. 3-seeded Virginia in the Round of 32, with a trip to Chicago on the line.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie is coming off a 29-point outburst where he put down six 3-pointers and tallied nine assists. His efforts were part of a greater 52.5% shooting performance from the floor for Tennessee, and a 45% stroke from deep.
Virginia (30-5, 15-3 ACC) is coming off a tight win over Wright State, where the Raiders gave everything they could. Jacari White was the game-changer with 26 bench points, including six 3-pointers of his own.
The Vols (23-11, 11-7 SEC) and Cavaliers will be entrenched in their own mental battles. Turnovers have defined both programs. Tennessee’s Achilles heel has been free giveaways, and it reigned true with 16 in the first round against the RedHawks. Virginia averages a little more than 10 turnovers of its own per game, and gave the ball away 14 times against Wright State. The Cavaliers haven’t had single-digit turnovers in a game since Jan. 31, and have only kept them below the threshold twice since the year turned to 2026.
