Tennessee track and field had a record-breaking and historic weekend at the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, as well as the John Terrier Classic in Boston.
The Vols not only broke 21 personal or school records, but the men’s pole vault team became the first team ever to have five pole vaulters clear 18 feet in a single season.
Bob Pollock Invitational
The men’s pole vault team swept the podium once again, taking first, second, third and fifth place. Ismaila Sawaneh took first place with a clearance of 5.66m, moving him up to rank third in school history, as well as seventh in the NCAA. Following first place, both Blake Sifferlin and Evan Puckett jumped 5.56m, leading them into second and third place, respectively. Clark Bryam finished out the sweep for fifth place with a 5.36m jump, which places him tenth nationally.
Mya Strahm, who finished second in women’s pole vault at the Orange & Purple invite last weekend, moved up and into first place this weekend with a 4.22m jump, as well as senior Kendall Ford, who cleared 4.12m and placed fourth.
The field events continued to prove Vol strength. Grant Campbell placed third overall in the high jump with a jump of 2.13m, just shy of his personal indoor record of 2.18m. Aidan Ifkovits took second all-time at Tennessee in weight throw with a score of 22.36m. Cade Gray showed up and showed out in the men’s long jump, placing first with a 7.94m. Justice Jones, on the other hand, placed second with a 7.83m mark. This jump moved Jones into the national top 10 and even into ninth in school history.
The field results gave runners momentum in their own heats. Senior Myreanna Bebe completed a personal best on 8.09 in the 60m hurdles. Just like Ismaila Sawaneh, this places her seventh nationally. For 60m on the men’s side, Kalib Branch beat his record by 0.01 seconds, running a 7.76. Sky Tolbert then won the women’s pole vault final as she cleared 4.12m.
Graduate student Amelia Wills moved into the top 10 after she ran a 9:16.58 in the 3000m run. In the 400m, Esther Joseph took first place with a time of 51.36 seconds, making this the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season. Javonya Valcourt finished right behind her in second, posting a personal best 51.73. This ranks fourth nationally and third all-time at Tennessee. Cydney Write placed right at sixth, with a 52.23 time in the women’s 400m.
Andre Jackson II completed a personal-best time of 45.82 that places him fifth nationally in the 400m. Even more, this places Jackson fourth on the all-time indoor list. Doubling up in distance, the 800m run looked good on Carter Knox as he set a personal-record of 1:49.70.
John Terrier Classic
Two historic mile runs took place at the John Terrier Classic.
The first came from freshman Nelson Mapi Setek, who broke the men’s mile school record that was previously set by Canaan Anderson. With his 3:58.30 time, Setek beat the record by almost two full seconds. The second historic run came from Mary Nyaboke Ogwoka, who broke her own school record with a final time of 4:38.01, adding her to the top three in Vol history.
Other impressive long-distance runs came from sophomore Gavin Genisio, who ran the mile in 4:00.82 seconds, which is now a new personal record for him. In the 5000m run, Andie-Marie Jones, once again, ran a record-best of 16:05.90.
Vol track and field will continue their momentum as they head into the Doc Hale Invite, which takes place Feb. 6.
