There are several interesting courses that the university offers through University Outreach and Continuing Education for professional and personal development. These non-credit courses cover a vast array of topics.
“You can find a course if you’re interested in starting a new hobby or special interest,” Jennifer Bennett, program coordinator, said. “Most (classes) are short courses, some are even just one night.”
The classes are open to everyone and can be registered for up to the day before, sometimes even the day of the course. Class times vary, with many beginning late January and extending to early February. Classes range in price from $29 to a little more than $100.
The program offers both personal development and professional development courses. Examples of personal development topics are handwriting and dream analysis, dance, gardening and safe travel strategies.
Professional Development courses are beneficial for people preparing to enter the workforce, Bennett said.
“(The program) offers a broad range of courses, some as simple as computer classes to very comprehensive programs,” Paul Carney, program coordinator, said.
A few examples include classes in effective interviewing and writing resumes and cover letters. There are also courses on deterring procrastination, stress management, business writing, business etiquette and proper listening.
New courses are offered every semester, and all courses are evaluated based on their past success with students.
This semester, new courses in cooking should cause particular interest, Bennet said.
There is also a new course offered that focuses on self-defense. The workshop – titled “In Control by Choice” – is a one-night, two-hour course for a $45 fee. The course, which is geared toward women, is taught by martial arts expert Lancing England and features a guest speaker who will tell her personal story.
