It was a howling good time at the College of Veterinary Medicine’s 5k Fun Run and One Mile Dog Jog on Saturday, as runners and dogs participated to raise money for the student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The competition in the dog’s costume contest was stiff, as a bag of dog food was at stake, but the dogs appeared unfazed as they tried their best to impress the judges.
Dogs were dressed as dragons, rabbits, witches and a hippie, and there were angels and devils and even a yellow bumblebee present. Some came out to celebrate Halloween, to help out the vet school and to meet some new friends.
“(The event) is a really good way to bring two groups together, runners and veterinary school students,” said E. Elizabeth Eby, veterinary student who has competed in the dog jog for four years with her four dachshunds all showing their UT spirit in orange jerseys.
Participating dogs competed for the scariest costume, funniest costume and best couple. The winners were Sophie, an Australian Shepherd in a flower child costume complete with wig, for the funniest costume; Latté, a long hair Dachshund dressed as a witch, for scariest costume; and Killian, a Doberman mix dressed as a pimp with her owner dressed as a prostitute, for best couple.
Latt’s owner, Jessica Carbonell, freshman in veterinary medicine, said she did not think Latté would win and was not going to enter her. Latté, however, did not seem surprised in the least at her win, despite her owner’s lack of confidence.
The 5k Fun Run was divided by sex and age group. The overall best time was M. Elliot Hallum, senior in ornamental horticulture and landscaping, with 23 minutes and 31 seconds.
“I haven’t been running as hard as I usually train, and I was surprised,” Hallum, who has never won a 5K before, said. “I thought the competition was good, but I didn’t expect to win.”
One second behind him with the second best time was Ralph Harvey, D.V.M, associate professor at the college of veterinary medicine, who won his division for males over 40.
“I just wanted to do better at my age, a better time at my age,” Harvey said. “I was trying to sprint and pass (Hallum), but was not able to. He was too fast.”
Hallum added, “I think we have more dogs here than runners today. I think it’s fun to see all the dogs in costume.”
