The Tennessee Volunteers, sans Jamal Lewis, invade Sanford Stadium on
Saturday to battle Georgia in this week’s marquee college football
matchup.
Here’s a look at that game, as well as a few other important contests:
No. 4 Tennessee (4-0) at No. 7 Georgia (4-0), 3:30 p.m. ET,
CBS
The Vols are preparing to air it out against Joe Kines’ defense.
Quarterback Tee Martin and wide receivers Jeremaine Copeland and Peerless
Price are licking their chops at the opportunity to show that Tennessee
does indeed have a passing game.
Georgia, meanwhile, is led by 21-year-old freshman quarterback Quincy
Carter and all-purpose threat Champ Bailey.
Bailey, a cornerback/wide receiver has become a Heisman Trophy
darkhorse.
The Bulldogs are fresh off a big win at LSU, but the Vols, with the likely
return of Al Wilson at linebacker, will make it eight in a row against the
Dawgs.
Prediction: Tennessee 24, Georgia 21
No. 11 LSU (3-1) at No. 6 Florida (4-1), 7 p.m. ET, ESPN
Florida coach Steve Spurrier is an angry man.
He wasn’t happy with his team’s lackadaisical performance last week against
an Alabama team that was throttled the previous week by Arkansas.
However, now that Spurrier has settled on Jesse Palmer as the starting
quarterback, look for the Gators to be a bit more efficient on offense.
There’s no problem on defense for Florida, but there is a problem for the
Tigers, who are trying to salvage their season after a home loss to
Georgia.
No SEC team has won at the Swamp since Auburn did it in 1993.
Prediction: Florida 31, LSU 20
No. 5 Kansas State (4-0) at No. 14 Colorado (5-0), 7 p.m. ET, fx
The overrated Buffaloes, who barely escaped with a win over lowly
Oklahoma, are in for it against a superior Wildcat squad.
The combination of quarterback Michael Bishop and running back Eric Hickson
is enough to scare Colorado coach Rick Neuheisel’s already sparse hairline
into further retreat.
Prediction: Kansas State 38 Colorado 17
No. 3 UCLA (3-0) at No. 10 Arizona (5-0), 10:15 p.m. ET, Fox Sports
South
Wildcat quarterback Ortege Jenkins made one of the plays of the decade
in last week’s thrilling win over Washington, doing a complete flip over
three Husky defenders before landing in the end zone for the game-winning
touchdown.
Arizona will need more high-wire acts to stop a Bruin team that is flying
high as well.
Quarterback Cade McNown showed in last week’s demolition of Washington
State that Jenkins isn’t the only Pac-10 QB with the ability to hurdle
defenders en route to the end zone.
Prediction: UCLA 42, Arizona 31
No. 2 Nebraska (5-0) at No. 18 Texas A&M (4-1), 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
The Aggies have benched fifth-year senior quarterback and former Vol
Brandon Stewart.
It doesn’t matter.
Prediction: Nebraska 42, Texas A&M 14
