Mortar Board benefits honorees

that actively seeks outstanding seniors with exceptional leadership and

academic skills.

Students who qualify or would like to nominate someone should apply before

5 p.m. Feb. 20, at Tyson Alumni House.

Bryan Fluech, a senior, has seen the benefits. As a member of this prestigious

group, he considers the honor society a great way for students to capitalize

on their attributes.

“The Mortar Board is an honor society which encourages students

to excel and become the best leaders they can, not only for themselves but

for their community,” Fluech said.

To qualify for the Torch Bearer Chapter of the Mortar Board at the University

of Tennessee, a student should have at least a 3.13 GPA, while being in

the top 35 percent of his or her senior class.

Also, applicants need to demonstrate three distinct principle characteristics:

scholarship, leadership and service. There are four distinct subcategories

included in each. Further details are found on the application form.

Established in 1938, this nationally known honor society has enlisted

the services of students who dedicate themselves not only to their universities,

but to their local communities.

Fluech adds that the society also welcomes a diverse group to apply.

“This honor society welcomes anyone… there is no race or gender

not welcome that does not meet the required academic qualifications… It’s

not limited to one group,” Fluech said.

Students can also nominate themselves for membership. Nomination forms

should be returned to Tyson Alumni House.

Juniors who plan to graduate after December 1998 are also eligible.
