Resourceful. Creative. Tenacious. Hardworking. Survivors.

These words are used appropriately in describing the historic legacy of

African-Americans.

Black Heritage Day recognizes the achievements of African-Americans, which

will be observed Feb. 17 between 11 a.m and 2 p.m. on campus at the Black

Cultural Center.

Jane S. Redmond, assistant vice chancellor for Minority Student Affairs,

believes it should be the responsibility of every individual to realize the

numerous accomplishments of African-Americans.

“African-Americans have been able to persevere through slavery and beyond,

and it is time we as citizens pause and remind ourselves every day of these

contributions,” Redmond said.

As the coordinator of Black Heritage Day and other African cultural

activities, Redmond supports the idea there will be lasting positive

reaction felt by those individuals who may choose to take part in the

celebration.

“This celebration will transcend all colors. It makes no difference the

ethnicity. Each person will receive a better understanding of African

culture,” she said.

This is Black History Month but for those who believe it is just a one-

month annual occurrence, Redmond would strongly disagree.

“It’s just not a one-day celebration. This is a 365 day-a-year celebration,

including the upcoming millennium and beyond,” she said.

Furthermore, Redmond believes the perception of African-Americans by the

media is a misrepresentation of an entire population.

“Ultimately we want to broaden ones perspective and knowledge of

African-Americans, not just what they perceive from the media,” she

said.

Monica Smith-Albright, a graduate assistant, views this celebration as a

perfect opportunity for students to increase their knowledge of African

culture. “The Black Cultural Center is a place filled with opportunities to

view and learn from a different prospective,” Smith-Albright said.

The Black Cultural Center will be adorned with African-American Art, and

artifacts. Also, there will be an African-American Film Festival which will

showcase several films throughout the day, including the box office hit

Soul Food.

A reception with authentic African foods will be available at no charge.

Tours will be given at request.
