and in honor of this event, a group of international University of Tennessee
students has organized campus events to include, food, crafts, music and
dance.
Beginning on Sunday, April 26, at the International House, there will
be several opportunities to experience the culture and art of Israel.
“The purpose of the event is to expose students to the University
community and to the different aspects of Israel’s culture,” said Gideon
Zundelevich, planning committee organizer.
The scheduled events will include guest speaker Yoav Ben Hur on April
26 at 5 p.m.
Hur is a specialist in Middle Eastern politics and Israeli-Arab conflict,
Zundelevich said.
The lecture by Hur will focus on the modern Middle East. “It is
an excellent opportunity for others to view life in Israel beyond the narrow
point of view that television provides,” Zundelevich said.

On Tuesday, April 28, three movies are scheduled concerning Israel and
its culture. “There are three popular movies from the ’80s and ’90s.
The movie’s show different parts of the culture and all the movie’s have
subtitles in English,” Zundelevich said.
The movies are scheduled for 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. For more information

The final event is planned for 6 p.m., April 29. “We are going to
host an Israeli culture night with food, music, dance and displays,”
Zundelevich said. There is a $3 charge for food. The other events are free.
“The sole goal of of this night is to have some good time in the
Israeli way. The only thing we are missing is a beach for having a complete
experience,” Zundelevich said.
UT students who helped organized these events are made up of a diverse
group. “The group is American and non-American, Jews and non-Jews,
Israeli and Palestinian students,” Zundelevich said.
Gilya Schmidt, associate professor in religious studies, sees this as
an important event. “This is the most important event on campus celebration.
It is for students, by students,” Schmidt said.
Next semester the group plans to have a Friends of Israel Association
group, to include special educational activities.
“Our meetings this semester and next semester are open to anyone
who wants to join us for a nice talk,” Zundelevich said.
