Spring practice for the Tennessee football team culminates tomorrow with
the annual Orange and White Game at Neyland Stadium. The first chance to
get a look at the 1998 edition of the Vols will begin at 7 p.m. when,
unlike in years past, the first-team offense will face the first-team
defense.
“We’re looking for the first half of the Orange and White Game being a
game-type scrimmage,” said Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer. “The first
half will provide us an important game-type situation. With the spring
football limits, every scrimmage opportunity is valuable.”
According to Fulmer, it will be beneficial to have a competitive game. The
Orange and White Game used to pit first and second teamers against
reserves, or “the best versus the rest.”
“It’s going to be important for Tee Martin and for the offensive line to
play in a game-like atmosphere, with a good crowd. Also, it’s good for the
secondary because they get to go one-on-one versus some good people.”
Martin, who will be a junior next season, will lead the Orange team’s
offense. Joining him will be Freshman All-American tailback Jamal Lewis;
wide receivers Peerless Price and David Martin; fullback Shawn Bryson;
linemen Cosey Coleman, Jarvis Reado, Josh Tucker, Diron Robinson and
Mercedes Hamilton; and tight end Eric Diogu.
Offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe will be at the helm of the Orange
team.
The first-team defense, led by senior-to-be linebacker Al Wilson,
highlights the White team’s lineup. Lining up alongside Wilson will be
fellow linebackers Raynoch Thompson and Jerrod Hayden; linemen Roger
Alexander (a junior college transfer), Darwin Walker, Fred Weary and Corey
Terry; and defensive backs Dwayne Goodrich, Andre Lott, Fred White and Deon
Grant.
The White team will be coached by defensive coordinator John Chavis, whose
offense will be led by quarterbacks Joey Matthews and Burney Veazey.
At 5 p.m., fans will have a chance to meet their favorite Vol players and
get their autographs for about an hour. The gates to the stadium will open
at 4:45 p.m.
The game will also be preceded by several other activities, including the
second installment of a three-game Southeastern Conference series between
Tennessee and Arkansas at 3 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
And at halftime, Tennessee will honor former quarterback Peyton Manning.
Manning’s jersey will be retired and the first Peyton Manning Scholarship
Award winner will be recognized.
Tickets for the Orange and White Game will be on sale at Gate 21 at Neyland
Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. The Thompson-Boling Arena Ticket Office will be
open beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets will also be on sale today at the
Thompson-Boling from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Game tickets are $3 each, $1
